BAS Fellow Dr. Shahjahan Elected to Academy of Sciences
Prof. Dr. Md. Shahjahan, from the Department of Fisheries Management at BAU, is now a BAS Fellow Dr. Shahjahan. The Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) elected him for his outstanding contributions to science. Throughout his career, he has supervised over 70 MS and 8 PhD students. He currently guides 14 more researchers in fish eco-physiology.
Research in Fish Ecophysiology
In 2017, BAS Fellow Dr. Shahjahan established the Laboratory of Fish Ecophysiology at BAU. His team investigates how temperature, salinity, and light affect fish. He also studies anthropogenic factors like pesticides and heavy metals. This vital research helps the government create policies to remediate food and fish contamination.
Scientific Impact and Publications
As a highly-regarded researcher, BAS Fellow Dr. Shahjahan has led 12 major research projects. He currently manages two additional projects as a Principal Investigator. His expertise spans fish endocrinology, toxicology, and aquaculture. To date, he has published 167 research papers, with 127 appearing in Scopus-indexed international journals.
Global Recognition and Awards
His work appears in elite journals like Reviews in Aquaculture and Science of the Total Environment. With an h-index of 41 and over 5,100 citations, his global influence is clear. Stanford University and Elsevier even named him among the “World’s Top 2% Scientists” for 2023 and 2024.
He has received multiple honors, including the UGC Gold Medal and the BAS Gold Medal. BAS Fellow Dr. Shahjahan continues to represent Bangladesh at international conferences across Asia and Australia.
